Mind Body 101

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

The healthy human being loves to create

I am a massage therapist, yoga and tai chi teacher, and I love to study being human

And I love being human

I’m starting this blog to share with others

I want to share what i create

the mind creates

the body creates

the heart creates

the eyes create

being creates

being is

being is what it is

being naturally creates

just by being you, you are creating

and you can create something more beautiful or less beautiful

by the way you are in the world

just by being a softer person, you are creating a better world

tighten up, and you create a harder, rougher world

you have that great power of creation at your fingertips

It’s good to reach out and connect to others

It’s easy to avoid connecting

Connecting can be painful and my self shys from the pain

But growing pains that come from reaching out can heal the self that tries to hide

I’m trying to connect more and avoid it less

So this blog is titled Mind Body Blog

i’ve been studying the Mind Body ever since my first shiatsu class 24 years ago

And maybe since i first picked up a yoga book 34 years ago

i strained my back playing golf as a 14 year old

that yoga book helped cure my back

I have not played golf since

I’ve done lots of yoga since

and maybe since my first breath 48 years ago

What is mind body?

Mind body refers to two things that are actually one thing

The two things are the mind and the body

the one thing is you, the human being

somewhere along the line

someone noticed that humans can think and reason and plan and recall

and also walk and talk and move and dance and feel

the first batch of behaviors were not so tangible

so they created this concept called Mind

the mind does these intangible things like thinking

the second batch of behaviors are more tangible, like dancing

“the body does these things,” someone said

so the mind was separated from the body

it was a convenient way to talk about different behaviors

then along came a man named Rene Descartes (31 March 1596 – 11 February 1650)

he has been called the father of modern philosophy (Western Philosophy, that is!)

Descartes said “i think, therefore i am”

he said it is Thinking that raises man from the beasts

Thinking is the highest value

Feeling cannot be trusted, he thought

the body cannot be trusted

only the thinking mind can be trusted

this split of the mind from the body has echoed for 400 years

we are still trying to heal this split

the simple healing comes when we realize mind and body are one

but those simple words won’t heal

because so many of our attitudes and behaviors presuppose the split

the split pervades our world

men are cool headed thinkers

women are hot, emotional feelers

thus man is split from woman
